The Dustbowl Revival - "Flying With Icarus"

I don't think I've ever heard a band described as "a folk orchestra" that's "a combination of depression-era rootsy swing and 60's folk. Now I have, thanks to Venica, CA band Dustbowl Rivival .

I listened to this with low expectations, just because I thought it would be interesting but I ended up really enjoying it. It would go nice with a drunken bar scene in a movie. Also, that is definitely the coolest trumpet solo I've heard all year (I think that's a trumpet around the 2:00 mark). I doubt you'll ever hear something like this on MTV, but it's a nice addition to your collection if you like unique music.

Here's an iTunes bonus track from Wale's Attention Deficit out now. The wait for Attention Deficit has seemed like forever, and now that it's finally here it seems to be doing very well. What are your thoughts on the album?

My only complaint is that I wish he would have stuck to his roots and gone with a more live sound. I miss those go-go inspired beats that made Wale so unique. I feel like this album's sound is a little more generic. Maybe this was done to appeal to the masses, and maybe that's a good thing. Shit, it looks like it worked, and I can't be mad. Wale's flows and lyrics are on point and makes this album worth the purchase.

In case you were unaware of why so many mash ups were coming out this week, today marks the 5th anniversary of the term 'mash-up' being added to the Music Terms, Language, and Classification book (a must read if you've never seen it). Mash-ups have been around for a long time, but 5 years ago on this day the term 'mash-up' was made official and added to what most music lovers consider the defining literature of music. Let's celebrate.

Them Crooked Vultures - "No One Loves Me, & Niether Do I"

This songs sounds very Led Zeppelin-esque. Could be due to the fact that Them Crooked Vultures includes John Paul Jones (of Led Zep). This rock supergroup, also including Dave Grohl of The Foo Fighters/Nirvana and Josh Homme of Queens Of The Stone Age/Eagles Of Death metal, rocks hard as hell the old fashioned way, without sounding like whining brats. My only complaint is sometimes the vocals get overshadowed by the huge guitar riffs. Thanks to WAWSTSF. Preorder the album here. Definitely check this one out.

This is the kind of craziness that I've come to expect of Lady Gaga. In the video for "Bad Romance" Gaga takes visual elements from artists like Britney Spears and Kanye West and mixes them with some Tim Burton. I could have used a little more facial coverage though. Maybe more masks & veils next time? Very nice ending on this.

I've been seeing this song around a lot lately, and I didn't even bother to check it out. After the Ratatat remix of "Party and Bullshit", I didn't know that anyone else could fuck with it, but whoever this Hathbanger fellow is, he's made the unimaginable work. Miley Cyrus and Biggie? Actually, it sounds kinda natural. Biggie is like vodka - you can mix him with anything and it will get you fuuucked up. Wait, that's not where I was going with that. Lady Gaga - "Dance In The Dark"

New Lady Gaga from The Fame Monster out November 24th. Originally this album was going to be a re-release of Fame but Gaga said:

"I think re-releases are unfair... It’s artists sneaking singles onto an already finished piece of work in an effort to keep the album afloat. Originally [my label] only wanted me to put out three songs and now it’s much more than that. It’s a new album’s worth of material."

I agree. I'm not someone who fiends for more new Gaga, but I have to admit, Gaga gives me a little bit of hope for the female pop superstar. As much as I make fun of her for her craziness, her masks, and her balls, I think she's good for the image of pop stars. Her success has nothing to do with her being attractive. She looks better with a mask on. Her outfits rival Marilyn Manson for the craziest shit ever worn on MTV and her performances are wildly artistic. I'm not trying to push Lady Gaga, but I think she's a good substitute for your average female pop superstar. Now if we can only find a Justin Timberlake who wears masks and takes to stage in strange orbs.
