Monsters Of Folk - "Dear God" Live With The Roots

Monsters Of Folk perform one of my favorite songs off their album with the motherfuckin' Roots! Okay! Here is "Dear God (Sincerely MOF)" on Jimmy Fallon's show. Having ?uestlove sitting behind you automatically makes you a little cooler.

Monsters Of Folk - "Dear God (Sincerely MOF)" & "Baby Boomer"

I finally got around to listening through the supergroup Monsters Of Folk's self titled album. The album is good; some people will probably even say great, but they're probably confusing the word "great" with "done by great artists". If it wasn't for the constant shifting of the voices heard taking control of songs, much of this album would run together in a stream of country influenced rootsy Americana songs.

The positive way to look at it is that you've got good songs sung by some of your favorite voices. The negative is that with all these great artists coming together, you might have expected some huge, eclectic, experimental, monster of an album with swirling flavors and unexpected moments of greatness. The first song on this album, "Dear God (Sincerely MOF)", provides a disappointingly false idea of where this album is going to go so here's your warning; Don't get too excited. If you go in with that mindset, it would be hard not to enjoy throwing this album on while sitting around a campfire or cooking up bacon eggs on a Saturday morning.

Video! Monsters Of Folk Perform "Say Please" on Conan

I've talked about these guys enough, you should already know. Here they are on Conan playing "Say Please", which is the first song I heard from them, and still my favorite. I like that they take turns on vocals and share the spotlight. They're like the Slaughterhouse of the rock game.

Monsters Of Folk - "Whole Lotta Losing" & "Ahead Of The Curve"

Here's two more tracks from the supergroup Monsters Of Folk. Go here for the first track and some more info. Basically what you've got is Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), M. Ward (She & Him), and another dude that has been around in various plaid shirt wearing bands. They've done an album together and it comes out next week.

These tracks have a folksy, sometimes country (eghck) influence and the guys seem to take turns in the limelight, making for an interesting guessing game as to who is going to be taking the lead singer role in each song. My only negative thing to say is the songs are a little bland. With guys as talented as these, you know you're going to get good song writing. It's delivered, but expected. I would have liked to see them travel down a new path together, instead of holding hands and trying to retrace their steps. Thanks to Will.

New! Monsters Of Folk (Conor Oberst + Jim James Supergroup) - "Say Please"

Most of the time, supergroups are a let down. I tried to work this out mathematically, but it doesn't make sense. It seems natural that if you like Artist A and you like Artist B, that you will also like Artist A + Artist B. If Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Bob Marley, Pac, Biggie, and Kurt Cobain got together for an album, I bet it wouldn't even get posted at P&P.

Whatever. This is a case of the rareness. A supergroup that actually sounds good! Monsters Of Folk is Conor Oberst & Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes) and Jim James (My Morning Jacket) & M. Ward (She & Him). Maybe the fact that I've been recently disappointed by both Conor Oberst and Jim James makes this collaboration even more surprisingly delicious. I don't know who does the song writing, or if they all work together on this, but you can definitely hear some Bright Eyes elements and some MMJ influence. Good shit. Thanks for giving musicians everywhere the strength to keep trying to make sense of this madness that is the supergroup conundrum.
